Dara O’Shea has signed a new three-year contract extension to stay at West Bromwich Albion until June 2025.
O’Shea began his career with his hometown club, St. Kevin’s Boys before making the move to West Brom in 2016, where he graduated through their youth academy to make his senior debut in August 2019, with his first league goal coming in a 2-0 away win at Millwall in February 2020.
The Irish defender ultimately helped West Brom clinch automatic promotion at the end of 2019-20 season by just two points from Brentford, with the Bees having lost their last two matches which cost them promotion ahead of the Baggies who drew 2-2 at home to QPR on the final evening.
O’Shea however couldn’t help the Baggies avoid relegation in his first season as a Premier League player the following campaign, before an ankle injury whilst on international duty limited him to just two goals in 14 appearances last season.
Speaking about his decision to sign a three-year contract extension, O’Shea said: “Albion has been my home for six years and I’m delighted that will be the case for at least another three.
“The club has supported me throughout my development, and I will do everything I can this season to repay their trust and belief.”
O’Shea is currently preparing for the new Sky Bet Championship season with West Brom who are unbeaten in four of their five pre-season friendlies.
Looking ahead to the upcoming campaign as West Brom target a promotion challenge, O’Shea added: “I’m excited about the new season and I cannot wait for us to get started. I know I’m not the only one.
“The lads have all worked tirelessly throughout pre-season and now we’re counting down the days for the new season to get underway.”
Albion manager, Steve Bruce meanwhile praised the 23 year-old as “a model professional and excellent centre-half” who is expected to play an integral role in their season and is “delighted” to tie him down to a three-year contract extension.
Reflecting on O’Shea’s progress since he recovered from a serious ankle injury which sidelined him for several months last season, Bruce added: “He returned to fitness at the end of last season and has continued to grow stronger over the summer.
Bruce proceeded to explain why the club have signed O’Shea for two further seasons with his current contract having been set to expire next summer, as he said: “Dara cares about Albion and is hungry for success here. I’m hopeful together we will be able to achieve that.”
In total, O’Shea has scored five goals in 66 appearances for West Brom across the last three seasons and earned 12 international caps for Republic of Ireland.
